Thomas Hardy class is our class for children in Years 1 and 2. Their teacher is Mrs Killick.
We had a great Spring Term in Thomas Hardy Class!
We really enjoyed our first half term learning about space. We explored aliens, the moon and meteor showers in our books ‘Man on the moon (a day ion the life of Bob)’ by Simon Bartram and ‘Look up!’ by Nathan Bryon; found out about space and the planets in our solar system, made moon buggies, finding out how wheels and axels work and learn all about the first moon landing in 1969.
We thought about whether we would like to go to the moon and what our reasons would be for and against. We can now recall the names of all the planets (including Pluto the Dwarf Planet) and the names of the three astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission. We know that wheels are often fixed to their axels and that it is the axel that turns freely within the axel holder.
In the second half term we travelled across the world to Asia, to compare life in the water village of Kampong Ayer in Brunei, to life in Broadwindsor, our school’s village; created landscapes and cityscapes in the style of Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Jean Metzinger and learnt about what plants need to grow and thrive.
We read the story of ‘Rapunzel’ (with a twist!) by Bethan Woollvin, wrote letters giving Rapunzel advice of how to escape from the witch and then created our own twisted fairy tales. We read, learnt and recited poetry; especially enjoying Mark Goodfellows poem about Caterpillar Cake!
We spent time this term exploring why Shabbat is important to Jewish Children and also what Christians believe God is like. We have secured our knowledge of place value in maths and used our mathematical thinking to explore measures in length and height, mass, volume and capacity.
Our Spring term finished with a trip to Washingpool Farm where we met pigs, sheep, Ruby Red cows and chickens. We had a very muddy walk and saw their amazing polytunnels where the lettuces and herbs were beginning to grow. We were able to bring back potatoes to plant in school and even made our own paper pots to plant seeds in.
What a fantastic, busy Spring Term we have had!
Our trip to Lyme Regis on 5th July helped support our work on Mary Anning in our History topic and our work on seaside, life on the coast and in the sea for Geography topics.
