Curriculum Statement

The vision for our school and curriculum is:

“Taking the extra step for ourselves, others and Our world in learning, kindness and ambition”

This means we will develop our pupils through our values so when they leave our school they will take with them:

  • Courage to pursue interests that take them out of their comfort zones
  • Perserverance to work through difficulties to reach their dreams and goals
  • Kindness to look after themselves and make a difference to others through their actions
  • Creativity to seek solutions beyond the obvious and be ready to adapt their thinking
  • Responsibility to become learners who self-reflect and drive themselves towards excellence

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to explicitly teach and celebrate these values progressively through a variety of subjects and learning experiences both in and outside the classroom.

Each subject has been deconstructed to identify key concepts. These have been broken down into developmental steps. This means children are able to recall the big ideas within subjects. Subject specific substantive and disciplinary knowledge has been mapped carefully to ensure children make exceptional progress from EYFS to Year 6. Our curriculum is enriched through experiences that are relevant to the children’s locality and opportunities to appreciate our country and the world beyond.

We ensure that writing opportunities are meaningful, that means children have a reason for their writing outcomes that inspires them. They write for pleasure and understand that writing is a powerful gateway to expression.

Children make exceptional progress in reading because we begin with the rigorous and systematic teaching of phonics. This provides a strong foundation for early readers at our school. Bespoke reading support is carefully planned to ensure all children become independent, fluent readers by the time they leave our school. We have built an inclusive reading culture across the school that embraces children’s rights to explore, discover and read in the way that inspires them.

We have developed progressive key concepts in maths and ensure that children are given real-life opportunities to apply their skills. This creates a sense of purpose and develops children’s understanding of how maths is integral to daily life. Above all, our approach to maths is to foster creative, questioning, efficient, autonomous and collaborative young mathematicians who enjoy the ‘buzz’ of thinking hard to solve real life problems with confidence and skill.

We recognise we have the responsibility to ensure that our children move on to the next stage of their lives with the ability to self-reflect, the perseverance to keep going and the courage to be the very best version of themselves.

Long-term overviews and individual progressions in subjects are available on this website. Parent summaries for the curriculum each term are available on the website or on request from the school office.
