At Broadwindsor Primary School, we intend that all children will produce exciting, creative work in their Art and Design lessons, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. We aim for pupils to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, collage and art involving textiles. They will experiment with a range of different tools, materials and techniques, investigating colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Pupils will be taught to evaluate and analyse their own work and that of other artists using appropriate vocabulary and will learn about the work of great artists, craft-makers and designers. Finally, we intend that lessons should be fun and encourage a life-long love of Art and Design, giving an opportunity for pupils to learn about other cultures and times while preparing them for future experiences in their lives.
Art and Design at Broadwindsor is taught for an hour a week as a half-termly block (alternating with Design and Technology), often making meaningful links to other curriculum areas, the children’s own experiences and the local area to enrich and extend our pupils’ learning.
There is a clear progression of skills and techniques to be covered starting in the Early Years Foundation Stage, moving on to Key Stage One and through to Key Stage Two. As part of this progression, we will use sketch books from Year 3 onwards, to record the process of creating a piece of work, experimenting with materials, techniques and ideas. This will build upon our pupils’ discussions and evaluations of work in Key Stage One.
As part of our planning, we will include trips to art galleries, working with visiting artists in school, creating art for our local community and in a range of settings, for example Any Goldsworthy sculptures at the beach.
We will measure the impact of our Art and Design teaching by listening to the children’s discussions and responses. We will evaluate preliminary and final pieces of work and work in the sketchbooks, including through regular opportunities for display and exhibitions across year groups to monitor and evaluate progression (for example a whole school gallery highlighting a particular skill). We will use ipads and digital cameras to record the children’s practical learning and to assess the effectiveness of our teaching. Finally, we will work together to scrutinize pupils’ work in order to discuss their progress in relation to the school’s Progression of Skills document.
